Calcium Chloride
Physical Properties : Calcium Chloride is a white deliquescent powder that is crystalline , lumpy , or flaky in nature. It is in its solid form at room temprature and is soluble in water and ethanol. Its melting point is 782 C and boiling point is 1600 C . Its specific gravity is 2.15 . It can retain mixture for a prolonged period of time in comparison to any other compound . Chemical Properties : It is produced by the reaction between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate at room temperature . Uses : Due to the intense heat evolved during its dissolution it is used in deicing. It is used as an drying agent to control dust , because its hygroscopic nature keeps a liquid layer on the surface of the roadway which holds dust down , thereby reducing its grading cost by as much as 50 % .Due to its same nature , air and other gases may be passed through a coloumn of it to remove its additional moisture .It is also used for treating aquarium water. It is used in plastic concrete as an accelerator. It is used in blast furnaces, as a brine for refrigeration , as a food preservative and also as a thinner in fabric softener . It acts as a source of chemical in chemical processing . Since it absorbs moisture very quickly , it should always be stored in an air tight container .
