Physical Properties : Sodium Bromide is a toxic , white , crystalline sodium compound , free from extraneous impurities . It is thoroughly soluble in water and partially soluble in alchohol .It is thermally stable . It absorbs moisture from its surroundings and has a saline and a bitter taste. Its molecular weight is 102.9 and melts at 758 degree C .It resembles a lot to sodium chloride .
Chemical Properties : One way to make sodium bromide is to react hydroxide with hydrobromic acid. It is then purified by the method of recrystallization. Since the preparation method of sodium bromide is costly , sodium metal are made to react with all the halogens to form sodium halide first and then it is burnt with bromine to prepare sodium bromide .It is specially used in the formation of the compounds that are calcium sensitive .When sodium is preffered over calcium , and chlorine is not desireable a pure sodium bromide solution is used . It does not gives any side effect in the reaction used , thus makes no damage in its formation.
Uses : Sodium Bromide is employed in the preparation of photographic emulsions and further in its processing . It act as a chemical intermediate for the manufacture of various chemicals, and bromides. To obtain HBr , NaBr is treated with a strong , non-volatile acid . It is used for water clarification and thus involves itself in pool treatment product .It is also used as a wood preservative and a flame retardant . NaBr is widely used in organic synthesis , as a nucleophile to convert organochlorine compounds to organobromine derivatives , which are more useful reactives.Sodium bromide absorbs moisture when exposed to the atmosphere therefore it should be stored in an air tight container in a dry place .
