PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES : Ammonium sulphate is a colorless to grey , inorganic chemical compound . It forms a large rhombic prisms and is available in nature as mineral mascagnite. It is saline in taste . It is soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol or acetone . It decomposes on heating , generally around 235 degree centigrade .The compound is prepared commercially by reacting ammonia with sulphuric acid . It readily absorbs water from air and thus is slightly hygroscopic in nature . On boiling , its aqueous solution discharges ammonia . FORMULA : (NH4)2SO4
SYNONYMS : Sulphuric acid diammonium salt , Ammonium sulphate, Diammonium sulphate , Sulphatom ammoniya .
USES : Ammonium sulphate is been blessed with the property of being used mainly as an artificial fertilizer for alkaline soils . It acts as an insecticides , herbicides , and fungicide . When ammonium sulphate is added in the soil , sulphate is released to form sulphuric acid , which helps in lowering the ph of the soil , and also acts as a nitrogen fertilizer which is essential for growth of plants. Its precipitation is generally used for purifying proteins . It is also used for fireproofing .Chemically, it is used in the preparation of ammonium salts .
