Magnesium Carbonate
Physical Properties : Magnesium carbonate (MgCo 3), is a very light ,odourless, tasteless, white amorphous fine powder that occurs in nature as mineral . Several hydrated and basics forms of magnesium carbonate also exist as minerals. It is often reffered as chalk. Basically magnesium carbonate is obtained by mining the mineral magnesite . Magnesium carbonate can also be obtained by exposing a slurry of magnesium hydroxide to carbon dioxide under pressure (3.5 to 5 atm) below 50 °C, which gives soluble magnesium bicarbonate: Light in weight, magnesium carbonate contains minimum moisture and no dust particles .
Chemical Properties : All forms of magnesium carbonate dissolves in acids .When dissolved with acid magnesium carbonate decomposes with release of carbon dioxide . We can also get magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide by decomposing MgCo3 at high temprature. This process is known as calcining. It is slightly alkaline in nature having a PH value of 9.
Uses : MgCO3 has a variety of applications too. It is widely in the manufacturing of products including inks, glass, dentifrices, pottery , porcelain. and cosmetics. MgCO3 is also used in flooring , fireproofing , fire extinguishing compositions, cosmetics, dusting powder, and toothpaste. It helps in retaining the colour of food too. It is applied as a filler material , smoke suppressant in plastics and a reinforcing agent in neoprene rubber. It also helps in giving flow control , moisture stability and fragrance retention in talcum powders. In addition , pure magnesium carbonate is used as a laxative to loosen the bowels , as an anti-acid , nutritional supplement and an anti caking agent .It act as an additive in table salt to keep it free flowing .Last but not the least Magnesium carbonate is also used as a drying agent for hands in rock climbing gymnastic and weight lifting .
MgCo3
- Light bulky white powder with content of magnesium oxide approx.40-42% uses as drying/anticaking agent in foods, filler for rubber and color retention agent.
