PHYSICAL PROPERTIES : Sodium sulphide is a yellow or brick red coloured, hygroscopic flake like compound.It is crystalline and deliquescent in nature. It is readily soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol.It is a strong base and acts as a strong alkaline aqueous  solution It remains stable under ordinary condition and oxidizes itself in air.When exposed to moist air it  emits  hydrogen sulfide ,which smells much like rotten egg.

USES : Sodium  sulphide is primarily used in the paper and pulp industry .In the textile industry it acts as a bleaching , desulfurizing ,and a dechloronating agent .It plays an important role in ore flotation,oil recovery,food preservative,making dyes,printing and detergents. It also helps in the manufacturing and intermediating of chemicals.It is a major co-product in the manufacture of Barium carbonate. It acts as a sharpening agent in soaking process and is also used for sulfitization of tanning extract, in the leather industry.Its various fields of other  application includes, in the production of rubber chemicals,hydrometallurgy of gold ores,lithography,floatation of powdered lead and copper ore,engraving and as a photographic reagent .It too,has the efficiency to insolubilize metals under sulphide forms .Its improved property makes it highly used as an oxygen scavenger agent in water treatment .
